4 out of 5 stars Awesome thus far, but you'll need a decent internet connection   August 30, 2010
Nathan J. Hook (MN)
I've just started playing this game and so far I am fairly happy with it. I should warn you that you'll need a pretty hefty computer to run it due to the new graphical demands and make sure you have high-speed internet so you can download the necessary install content from the mandatory Steam account you need to have. This curve ball aside, and some weird crashes on XP, the game is a masterpiece.

So, what's all the fuss about? Where to begin?

For fans of Medieval TW like me the anticipation of Empire was too much, but the product was panned by hundreds of loyal fans and I steered clear of it. NTW was given more praise and my real reason for buying it was, a) I love this period and b) naval combat. I've become a bit of a nerd for the love 18th and 19th century fighting ships and the chance to weild one of these beasts in combat was all too aluring. If you understand naval combat of the period, the game doesn't disappoint, although true sailors might be frustrated a little by a lack of data on hand. But, that does fit the era of seamanship in this period and reinforces the skill level of the captains and admirals in charge.

Graphically, and those running dual graphics cards and high-end systems must be revelling in it, the sea battles are fantastic. The ships lumber towards each other and you have options to fire broad-sides or different types of shot to cripple ships and or board the enemy. The distortion effects from cannon fire are particularly impressive. Bits of wood and splinters fly off the vessles and sails are shot away leaving you languishing for control. I managed to dismast an enemy recently, which was cool to watch.

Now, I must stress I've only had a few hours of game play and am still getting to grips with land battles and the ins and outs of naval combat, but my early impressions have been positive.

The first thing you notice is the campaign map which is just freaking awesome. I love the reduced time component, so that each turn is two weeks which provides a feeling of more control over events. The campaign map's color scheme changes more subtlely to suit the change in seasons and late autumn early winter is breathtaking.

The complexity of the build and research trees have changed a little and you can set what technologies you want to research with the help of the self-spawning gentlemen who pop up. You also have more control over your government and can sack ministers, recruit generals and admirals, and thus have more input into the structure and composition of your society.

I'm still mucking about with the English right now, again, because of their inherent sea power in this era, so there is much to explore yet.

If there is a fly in the ointment, it's the odd crashes I have experienced. Sometimes during turns, sometimes mid battle. The cause is a mystery and could be my system, but I get the black screen, which is better than the blue screen of death. Aside from this hassle, I really love it and make sure i save it more regularly...I've not had this experience with Medieval TW, alas alack. Still, in terms of the total experience, in terms of government, settlement experience etc, and battles, the game provides a riveting experience and hopefully hours of game play which fans of the franchise should enjoy...

4 out of 5 stars Decent and Flexible Game   August 30, 2010

Decent and entertaining game but the unit animation are not as good as in Medieval II Total War. The addition of the naval component is a nice touch even though the controls are not as intuitive as I would have expected. Unit path movement could have have use some waypoints but this game is of good value for the price and buying it from Amazon made it real easy. The use of Steam for the game has its good and bad points, the bad thing was in installing the game it did not really read the DVD but downloaded the latest game version off the web from Steam which is a 22GB download and that took some time. The good thing with it running under Steam is that you get the latest game update all the time. Overall I am happy with this game.

4 out of 5 stars Napoleon Total War vs AOE 3   August 25, 2010

I have Recently Purchases this product and am very pleased at my purchase. In this review i will compare Age of Empires 3 and Napoleon Total War. I will start with Age of Empires 3. It is a very Fun game and immerses you in the strategic options and units, however I am disappointed with the Amount of Non-Fiction in the campaign. There are many units in Age of Empires and it allows you to build units and train more. Napoleon Total War is a similar contender.
Napoleon Total War Has many advantages over AOE 3 the graphics are improved, you can zoom in and out, you do not have to train units, and is more realistic in battle maneuvers and formation. The story in Napoleon Total War is short but sweet. You get to fight and change history in many battles such as The Pyramids, Trafalgar, and Waterloo. You also do not lose a mission and start over, you simply continue and make your next move. I recommend Napoleon Total War for people looking to enjoy a strategic get what you get in units game. I recommend AOE 3 for people looking to play better naval combat, build defenses and buildings, and train units. Napoleon Total War Received 4 stars because it has slow fire artillery and the units run in fear after losing half of their men. I would recommend these games for everyone 10 and up.

5 out of 5 stars A much-improved Empire: Total War   August 5, 2010

I purchased Napolean Total War alongside Empire: Total War and have thoroughly enjoyed both. Essentially, NTW is built off the ETW game engine but is based around the historic campaigns and battles of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. You can command either Napolean's armies or those of his enemies in both battle and campaign. Unlike previous Total War titles, there are two choices for the Campaign mode. One allows you to play as Napolean in one of several combat theaters as you attempt to conquer Europe one piece at a time, while the other lets you play as one of his rivals in an attempt to halt his march East.

Like ETW, NTW requires Steam to install and activate. While many have criticized both games for this, I haven't found that Steam has hindered my experience with either game in any way. In fact, after activating your game copy's serial number and tying it to your Steam username, you no longer need to use the original DVD to play or install the game. The downside to this is, of course, that it virtually eliminates any chance of reselling the game as that would require the buyer having access to your Steam account.

The gameplay in NTW is its strongest feature. I considered the gameplay in ETW to be solid, with a few vexing exceptions. For example, in the Campaign the movement around the map was often jumpy, and it took several minutes for your opponents to complete their moves in between turns. NTW, in contrast, is largely devoid of any such issues. Even in battles, the graphics are better and everything is just smoother overall. Naval battles have in particular been improved, with a redesigned control panel and new options (e.g. repair ships that aren't in combat).

Overall I have found NTW to be a step up from ETW, which was already a great game. There are almost no faults to take issue with, resulting in a very enjoyable, frustration-free gaming experience.

A must have for Total War fans. Been playing them since Rome: TW and this one is my favorite yet. Different feel from Empire, so it might take a little getting used to, but overall it is a more polished game.
